How the IPO timetable actually works
An Indian book-built IPO runs on a fixed schedule, and knowing it prevents most of the panic that shows up in our inbox. The issue stays open for at least three working days. Anchor investors — large institutions — are allotted one working day before the issue opens, and that anchor book is public; it is a more meaningful demand signal than any grey market quote.
You apply through ASBA, which blocks the money in your bank account rather than debiting it. The funds stay blocked, and keep earning interest, until allotment. Retail applications are capped at ₹2 lakh; above that you bid in the S-HNI or B-HNI category, where allotment works differently.
Basis of allotment is finalised roughly one to two working days after the issue closes. If the retail portion is oversubscribed, allotment is done by a computerised lottery on lot-sized applications — which is why applying for one lot from several distinct PANs beats applying for many lots from one. Unblocking of failed applications and listing follow within a few days under the T+3 timeline.
What to read before applying
- The risk factors section of the RHP. It is written by the company's own lawyers and is the most candid part of the document.
- What the money is for. Fresh issue proceeds fund the business; an offer-for-sale simply moves shares from existing holders to you and raises nothing for the company.
- Three years of financials, not just the last one. A single strong year before an IPO is common and not always durable.
- Valuation against listed peers on P/E and margins, using the peer table the RHP is required to include.
Mainboard versus SME issues
The two are not the same product. Mainboard IPOs list on the main NSE and BSE boards, have a minimum application near ₹15,000, and reserve 35% of the issue for retail investors.
SME issues list on the NSE Emerge or BSE SME platforms. Lot sizes are far larger — typically ₹1 lakh or more per application — disclosure requirements are lighter, and the shares trade far more thinly after listing, so exiting a position can be genuinely difficult. Treat SME allotments as illiquid until proven otherwise.
